General Rules

  • Respect: Respect for fellow players is paramount in Japanese mahjong. Treat your opponents with courtesy and politeness at all times.
  • Table Etiquette: When sitting at the mahjong table, maintain proper posture and avoid slouching. Keep your hands and tiles on the table and avoid excessive fidgeting.
  • Silence: Excessive talking or making noise during the game can be distracting to other players. Keep conversation to a minimum and avoid loud noises.
  • Turns: When it’s your turn to play, do so promptly. Delaying your moves unnecessarily is considered bad sportsmanship.
  • Tile Handling: Handle the tiles gently and avoid slamming them onto the table. Rough handling can damage the tiles and disrupt the game.
  • Tile Placement: When discarding a tile, place it face down in the center of the table in an orderly fashion. Avoid tossing tiles haphazardly.
  • Declaring Winning Hands: When you have a winning hand, announce it clearly and place your winning tiles face up on the table for verification. Do this in a calm and respectful manner.
  • Avoid Cheating: Cheating is strictly prohibited and can result in disqualification and a poor reputation among other players. Be honest and play with integrity.
  • Trash Talking: Avoid trash-talking or making derogatory comments about other players’ hands or strategies. This behavior is considered unsportsmanlike.
  • Table Manners: Eating and drinking are generally discouraged at the mahjong table, as they can potentially damage the tiles. If players agree to allow snacks or drinks, do so with care and avoid spills.
  • Smoking: Smoking are prohibited at the mahjong table. If you smoke, use the balcony as an appropriate smoking area between two rounds.
  • Winning and Losing Gracefully: Whether you win or lose, maintain a gracious attitude. Congratulate the winner and accept defeat with dignity.
  • Payment and Settlement: We do not play for money, but we do accumulate points. Accurate record-keeping is essential to avoid disputes.
  • House Rules: Unlike other leagues, we do have some special rules here.
    • Kotegaeshi(小手返し)is allowed but not recommended.
    • There is no penalty on false calling but do apologize to other players please.
    • Chombo penalty is Mangan-sized, in other words, a reverse Mangan Tsumo without Honba. Current hand is then aborted and repeated, with Riichi bet returned, and Honba unchanged.
  • Learning and Improvement: Be open to learning and improving your mahjong skills. Don’t criticize others for their skill level and seek opportunities to enhance your own understanding of the game.
